An event was held at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) recently to connect varsity students with the community, especially schoolchildren, in order to create a generation that is passionate about biology and the environment around them. Organised by Biology Group of the College of Science, the ninth edition of ‘The Small Biologist’ event was aimed at enhancing the ability of children and expand their awareness in the neighbourhood.

Seventy children participated in the event. According to their age, they were divided into three groups: 6 to 10 years, 11 to 14 and 14 to 16.

The event included a biological exhibition showing stuffed animals, skeletons of different organisms and biological experiments.

The children visited the University Science Park to see natural plants of all kinds and learn facts about living organisms.

Entertainment competitions were held and gifts presented to them.

Asma al Jadida, supervisor of the groups, says the Bio-Junior event aims at teaching children the basics of biology, including how to use a microscope, knowledge of cell types, and differences between plant and animal cells.

Khalil al Mahrouqi, an organiser, said the event taught the children new scientific words related to biology and helped them develop qualities of observation, classification, measurement, description and prediction.

Tasnim al Maamari, another organiser, said continued cooperation between the family and the science teacher will contribute to the emergence of a generation that can understand the biological phenomena around them.
