Muscat, Nov 5 - Social media penetration in Oman has touched a remarkable 43 per cent, which is next only to Saudi Arabia, which has a penetration rate of 59 per cent. Research conducted by Statista, a UK-based online research agency, in the region says that Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain have the largest search engine usage of 99, 99, 98 and 94 per cent respectively.

Studies suggest the largest accessed search engine after Google is YouTube. Interestingly for YouTube users in the Sultanate, one of the most recent important feature of YouTube was the ‘Live Stream’ feature first used in 2008 to broadcast the YouTube Visionary Award event.

On the other hand, Omani Twitter users generate 500,000-600,000 tweets a day, according to an Arab social media report.

Oman’s national television channel, Oman TV occasionally uses it to broadcast important events such as His Majesty’s speeches.

The report, conducted in 22 Arab countries, surveyed social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.

It says Oman has the highest percentage of Twitter access through mobile devices in the Arab world.

Residents of Oman access Twitter on their mobile phones 90 per cent of the time, while the same was 80 per cent in other GCC countries.
