MUSCAT: The 1st Government Communication Forum will be held at the Cultural Centre of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Monday under the auspices of HH Sayyid Taimour bin Asa’ad bin Tariq al Said.

The forum is organised by the Secretariat General of the Council of Ministers, represented by the Government Communication Centre, in partnership with the Ministry of Information, SQU and Public Authority for Radio and Television (PART).

The opening ceremony will be attended by their highnesses, ministers, officials and employees of government institutions.

It is expected that the official account of the Government Communication Centre on social media will be launched on the first day.

This electronic presence plays an integrated role among government and public media departments. Thus, it will achieve the effective communication among the government and the society through different means of media channels. The centre depends on technical methods of communication as it has been directed by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of establishing the Centre to work in accordance with modern technical mechanisms.

The first day of the Government Communication Forum is characterised by hosting two of the leading international experiences, represented by the British and Singaporean models.

The Head of the Government Communication Unit of the British government will review the Government Communication model amidst economic changes while the Head of Government Communication of Singapore will review the experience of his country.

In addition, the forum will include a discussion between the audience and presenters of these international experiences to maximise the benefits of other experiences.

Since the Government Communication Centre is keen to build a trusting relationship between the public and government institutions, it is important to set up a specialised workshop regarding the importance of media planning in facing crisis and the importance of transmitting the right information at the right time.

The workshop will host the Ministry of Tourism, the National Committee for Civil Defense and Dr Abdullah al Kindi, an associate professor at the SQU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The workshop will focus on discussing the effective practices of crisis management.

Due to the effective role of the visual content in promoting institutions communication, the centre will organise a discussion on visual content and its role in the institutions as an effective factor for the public and an ideal framework in providing information and news.

During the discussion, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), will review their experiences regarding this technology.

Further, an Omani company specialised in marketing and visual identity “Alamah Marketing” will highlight its experience.

The second day of the forum will witness organising a number of activities and specialised workshops targeting directors of media and social communication departments. This includes traditional channels, such as radio, television, journalism and electronic communication and new media, such as social media and e-content management.

The second day will also witness a specialized workshop for officials and information department’s employees in the Sultanate on the mechanisms of activating the government communication and new media. In addition, a workshop will be held on national media campaigns, as well as a discussion session to follow up recommendations of media and communication institutions’ challenges seminar, which was held by the Ministry of Information.

Moreover, the forum will include a workshop dedicated to Omani social media influencers. It will include an introduction about the impact and responsibilities of this category in shaping the public opinion. The event is expected to be the largest gathering of social media influencers in the Sultanate.

This shows the interest of the centre in activating the communication system between the government and society based on the impact of the Omani symbols in order to achieve knowledge exchange and increasing community awareness.
