MUSCAT: The Majlis Ash’shura on Thursday concluded discussing the statement of Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry. The discussions were attended by Shaikh Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Majlis Ash’shura Chairman.

The statement covered six main themes on the Ministry’s plans and executive programme, its role in developing the economic diversification during the 9th Five-Year Plan, the legislative system and the agreements, the industrial estates, the free zones, the efforts made by the government to improve business environment and means of developing SMEs to enhance their role in economic diversification policy.

The inputs during the session focused on issues related to diversifying sources of income, the mechanism for the employment of job-seekers and eliminating illicit trade which has adverse social and economic effects on society.

On Wednesday, Dr Sunaidy revealed that 3,498 citizens have secured employment by the end of December 2017 as part of His Majesty the Sultan’s Royal directives for the creation of 25,000 new positions for young Omani job-seekers. Of this number, 800 have been employed in industrial enterprises, he noted.

The year 2018, the minister stated, will also witness a number of policies and initiatives designed to help commercial organisations weather the current economic situation. However, the industrial sector was relatively untouched by the downturn, he added. — ONA
