Hiking and trekking activities are popular in the Sultanate, thanks to its diverse terrain. Shiyah Village, a part of Wadi Al Arbeen located in Quriyat, ranks as one of the top destinations for those seeking adventure.

The village is famous for its local plants and fruits, besides many green lagoons and waterfalls, and high mountain ranges. Many falajs, built at the edge of the mountains, are methods employed to water the gardens and get fresh drinking water.

The village also has small caves and old houses used by locals as shelters to protect themselves from flooding, cold and heat.

Trekking long distances through the wadi is quite tough. Snakes lurk under the rocky edges. It is difficult to spot them because of their colour, which merges with the natural surroundings.

Tourists and nature lovers head to this village to explore nature’s bounty as well as capturing beauty of the place in their cameras.

Recently, a 10-member group, all youths from a nearby village, went on an expedition to the wadi. It takes about four hours (eight hours both ways) of trekking to get a view of the beautiful waterfall.

Their aim was not only to explore, but also to keep themselves fit.

“By walking up and down the hills, the heart pumps harder to keep up the demand for oxygen. Though trekking is not a high intense sport, it helps in increasing blood flow to muscles and brain,” said the group’s leader.

“The fresh air as well as plants and animals in the wild helps a person appreciate nature in a better way,” he added.

Most tourists depend on the locals for directions to the place. The team members felt the Ministry of Tourism should ensure basic services, including directions to the site, are provided to tourists.
