IBRA, Dec 16 - Al Sharqiyah University will celebrate the inauguration of its new campus in the Wilayat of Ibra under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, Minister of Culture and Heritage tomorrow.

The new campus consists of six main buildings for the colleges of engineering, business management, applied sciences and health in addition to the administration building, the students services centre, the educational resources building and the services building.

The buildings and labs have been constructed and equipped to the latest standards.

The campus’ total area exceeds 40,000 sq metres with a construction cost of RO 25 million. The building’s designs reflect the ancient Omani architecture.

The buildings are equipped with the latest labs and equipment.

“The new campus will cater to 1,500 students in different programmes every year. In five years, we will be able to accommodate 7,000 students, meeting the increasing demands of the local as well as international job market,” Dr Aboud bin Hamad al Sawafi, President of the committee, told the Observer.

The university was designed as an urban fabric that reflects the old Omani style. Such urban style consists of streets and green spaces among groups of buildings overlooking the main square of the university.

The oval shape of the university, inspired by the rays of the sun, is one of the most distinctive features of the design.

Established in 2009 by a Ministerial Decision (78/2009) issued by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), ASU is located in Ibra, North Al Sharqiyah, some 150 km from capital Muscat.

Its vision is to aspire to be a leading higher education institute that promotes authentic values, innovation and socio-economic development.

The university started its first academic year in 2010. Currently, there are five colleges: College of Business Administration, College of Engineering and College of Applied Sciences, College of Law and College of Arts and Humanities.

The total number of approved programmes in all its colleges is 15. The total number of students in the current academic year (2017-18) is 2,905 compared with 240 (2010-11).
