Seminar on tropical cyclones, flash floods kicks off tomorrow

Muscat: The fourth seminar on "Tropical Cyclones and Flash Floods: 10 years after Guno and Phet: The Learned Lessons) will begin tomorrow (Monday) in an attempt to unify efforts of water experts and stakeholders and sharing knowledge and expertise on tropical cyclones and flash floods through 25 working papers in 5 sessions and seven topics.


The opening of the seminar will be held under the auspices of Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Minister of State, Governor of Muscat.


The seminar, organised by Oman Water Society, aims to reduce the negative effects of these natural phenomena, develop early disaster risk management systems and warning monitoring systems that will contribute to predicting and preparing for them and identifying the actions and preparations that have been achieved by the concerned authorities to deal with them in the future.


The seminar will shed light on the Sultanate's experience in encountering cyclones, flash floods and the learned lessons, as well as reviewing the achievements of the competent authorities in the field of precautions to reduce risks of floods.


The seminar will identify the latest technologies and solutions to reduce and minimise the negative effects of cyclones and flash floods and recall the global experiences in preparing for cyclones, relief and rescue operations.


The seminar's themes include the preparations and experiences gained in confronting these phenomena (their origin and reasons for their climatic conditions), ways of reducing their negative impacts, the role of civil society institutions and media, in addition to familiarising with socioeconomic effects of cyclones, flash floods and the impact of cyclones on engineering designs of water infrastructure, climate change, cyclones and flash floods. --ONA
