MUSCAT: The seminar on ‘Our Children and Future Media’ recommended on Wednesday that they should focus on people with special needs in media production and support them in media through the Media Training Centre. The seminar was organised by the Muscat International Book Fair in its 23rd session at the Public Children’s Library .

Dr Abdulmunim bin Mansour al Hasani, Minister of Information, presided over the concluding session of the seminar and stressed the importance of planning and implementing an awareness campaign for different segments of the impact of electronic media and its dangers on children and the mechanisms to deal with it. It also recommended the inclusion of the theme of awareness of the concept of Global citizenship within the media campaign and the creation of alternative digital media programmes positively directed to children to replace unwanted media programmes.

Among the recommendations is the development of legislation and laws regulating on children dealing with the media in general and the digital media in particular, encouraging and supporting local experiences and the initiatives of associations and civil sectors related to children’s culture, providing good content in the new media and directing children to deal with modern technologies and protect them from their dangers.

The seminar, which was held within the cultural events accompanying the Muscat International Book Fair in co-operation between the Ministry of Information and the Public Children’s Library, included two themes: ‘Media and Children: Reality and Expectations’ and ‘Initiatives, Experiences and Applications in Children’s Media.’

At the end of the seminar the Minister of Information, sponsor of the event, honoured the participants in the seminar. — ONA
