Seeb, Nizwa to tussle it out for Ministry’s Basketball Shield

Muscat, April 25 - Defending champion Nizwa will face Seeb in the final match of the Ministry’s Basketball Shield Championship at the main hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Thursday. The final match will kick off at 7:00 pm under the auspices of Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs, in presence of dignitaries and officials. Ahli Sidab clinched the third place despite their defeat to Nizwa 76-77 at the same venue. Nizwa will be keen to clinch the shield for the sixth time in their history while Seeb are looking for their second title.


Seeb had clinched the first edition of the Ministry’s Basketball Shield Championship in 2012 while Nizwa were crowned the champions in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Ahli Sidab were the winners. Nizwa got their act together again and came back to clinch the titles of 2016 and 2017.  The final will undoubtedly be a treat for the fans as well, for these are the two best teams in Oman basketball at the tournament.  Defending champions Nizwa are coached by Mohammad al Qusaimi and Murshed al Yarubi is the assistant coach.  Coach Al Qusaimi will rely on the likes of Said al Saadi, Ahmed al Halhali, Hussain al Kindi, Arund Ranulf and Jaskus to deliver the goods for them.


Rivals Seeb, who are the former champion, are coached by Serbian Mimkiorious and assisted by Zaki al Mashari. Seeb’s challenge will be spearheaded the likes of Amjad al Hadidi, Omar al Hasani, Ayman al Harami, Sami al Ghelani, Antonio Demtries and Rashad Woods. Both teams will try to gain the top cash prize of basketball tournaments. The first placed team will get RO 15,000 and gold medals while second place team will receive RO 10,000 and silver medals. The third placed outfit will get RO 5,000 and bronze medals.
