CHICAGO: Former German national team captain Bastian Schweinsteiger had a successful debut on Saturday with the Chicago Fire, the German football star’s new home club in the United States. Schweinsteiger scored the first goal in the 17th minute of the match in Chicago against the Montreal Impact, which ended in a 2-2 draw. After scoring the goal Schweinsteiger was hugged and cheered by all of his new teammates. The match was played in front of 15,103 spectators at Toyota Park, where the 32-year-old star offered a committed performance both defensively and offensively over the entire match, though he still lacked some conditioning and physical fitness.

Luis Solignac scored the 2-2 equalizer for Chicago in the 93rd minute. The Impact’s goals were scored by Matteo Mancosu in the 61st minute and Ballou Jean-Yves Table in the 90th. Schweinsteiger was introduced on Wednesday by his new team in the US-based Major League Soccer. The World Cup champion, who won the Champions League and eight Bundesliga titles during 13 seasons at Bayern Munich before leaving in 2015 for Manchester United, was presented with his red, number 31 Chicago Fire jersey at a news conference. — DPA
