MUSCAT: Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidy, Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs, on Tuesday inspected a number of military locations in Dhofar Governorate belonging to the Sultan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the Ministry of Defence engineering services. He was accompanied during the visit by Lt Gen Ahmed bin Harith al Nabhani, Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces, and Maj Gen Matar bin Salim al Balushi, Commander of the Royal Army of Oman (RAO).

The field inspection included the headquarters of the 11th Infantry Brigade of RAO where Sayyid Badr was briefed about the work of SAF’s units and the Ministry of Defence’s departments. He also watched a visual display showing how the military units fared during and after Cyclone Mekunu. The representatives of the military units briefed Sayyid Badr on the work of the military emergency response teams in the relief and rehabilitation efforts and their role in providing water, electricity, food materials and medical requirements besides their efforts in reopening the roads and restoring services.

The minister responsible for defence affairs expressed his utmost thanks to the military sub-committee and its affiliate units in Dhofar Governorate for leading patriotic roles and efforts it made during the Cyclone Mekunu. He also hailed the excellent performance and perseverance showed by all the military units in terms of preparedness before the cyclone and the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts they made after the cyclone.

He added that it is not strange for the Sultan’s Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence’s departments which are known for their efficiency and organisation. The commendation the SAF has received from several organisations for its excellent management of the situation is a source of pride for all of us, the minister said.

The minister responsible for defence affairs also visited the Armed Forces Hospital in Salalah which is the only hospital in the governorate that is capable of providing medical and health services for the time being. He listened to a briefing from the Brigadier Dr Ali bin Nasser al Maskari, Head of Military Medical Services, and from the commander of the hospital about the role the hospital played during the adverse weather conditions especially after all the sections of the Sultan Qaboos Hospital were shifted to the Armed Forces Hospital and the medical services it rendered to citizens and residents during this period.

The minister responsible for defence affairs also visited the Southern Sector of the Engineering Services and reviewed the efforts being exerted by the ministry’s engineering services.

He was briefed on the endeavours made by the engineering services to supply water in many areas setting up water stations and providing water tankers as well as its efforts to reopen the roads and provide electric generators.

The minister also inspected the works undertaken by SAF to restore normalcy in Dhofar Governorate. He visited the Royal Navy of Oman’s unit at the Port of Salalah and reviewed the support it provided to the port.
