Sayyid Asaad to open WHO-UHC regional meet

SALALAH: His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tareq al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, will preside over the opening ceremony of the Ministerial Regional Meeting ‘The Road to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the Eastern-Mediterranean Region (EMR)’ at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah on Monday. Dr Ahmed al Mandhari, WHO-EMR Regional Director, and Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, along with Dr Naoko Yamamoto, UHC Assistant Director-General, will deliver the key speeches.


A video message of Dr Tedros Adanom, WHO Director-General, will be screened during the ceremony. The meeting will touch on the non-communicable diseases in the context of Universal Health Coverage. The meeting is organised by the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. Around 22 Eastern Mediterranean Region countries, represented by the ministers of health, a number of high-level officials, consultants, advisers and experts, as well as several national health institutions, will take part in the regional meeting.


The meeting aims to assess the regional situation and share successful international and regional experiences in Universal Health Coverage (UHC) advancement with regional leaders and policymakers responsible for national health systems. The meeting will draw upon the best global practices and knowledge. It is hoped that a stronger commitment to develop and implement roadmaps for advancing UHC in the region will be declared during the meeting. — ONA
