By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: Jan. 28 - SalamAir, Oman’s first low cost carrier, will be launched on Sunday, marking an important milestone in the history of the country’s aviation industry. His Highness Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said will preside over the event. Their Highnesses, ministers and other delegates will attend the event at the VIP terminal of Muscat International Airport. The airline will commence its maiden services between Salalah and Muscat on January 30. Fares start from RO 11 on the sector, according to the website.

The Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) on Saturday said it had issued the “operating licence” to SalamAir in accordance with the provisions of Civil Aviation Act as the company had met all the requirements. The company has been issued the Air Operator Certificate and the commercial licence that will allow it to serve both domestic and international routes. SalamAir is owned by Muscat National Development and Investment Company (ASAAS) formed in 2014 as a partnership between the State General Reserve Fund (SGRF), Muscat Municipality and various pension funds.

The company won a government tender in January and reported it would begin operations with flights to Salalah, followed by Dubai and Jeddah. Operations on the Dubai-Muscat sector will begin from February 15. Passengers have been offered various options such as Light, Friendly and Flexi. Under Light option, no changes in dates are possible and no refund in case of cancellation and only 7 kg of hand baggage is allowed.
