By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: May 7 - Private airline Salalah Air and Canadian company Viking Air Ltd agreed to have long-term business cooperation in terms of aircraft supply and other technical support to ensure smooth operation of the low cost carrier in the Sultanate. As a first step both the parties underwent discussions and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sunday to supply two DHC-6 Twin Otter. No timeline has been fixed for the supply, but both the parties sounded positive over the likely outcome of the discussions done so far.

The signatories to the MoU were Ali Masoud Mohammed, Managing Director and Board Member of Salalah Air and Robert Mauracher, Executive Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Viking Air.

Present on the occasion were Awad bin Mohammed Bamkhalif, Chairman of Salalah Air; Mohammed al Arasha, CEO Salalah Air, and other senior staff members of the newly launched airline.

Terming signing of the MoU an important stepping stone of Salalah Air, Al Arasha hoped to do other basic formalities soon to do a proper announcement of the airline’s operation. “We are progressing well in terms of logistics management, staff management, documentation etc,” he said while commenting on the timeline of the airline’s operation.

Mauracher explained about the strength that Viking Air carries in the aviation sector and said: “The Series 400 Twin Otter is the best-selling next generation turbo-prop aircraft in its class, with Viking aircraft sold and delivered to 29 countries worldwide. Viking provides OEM support for the global fleet of de Havilland legacy aircraft (DHC-1 through DHC-7) and forms part of Westerkirk Capital Inc, a Canadian private investment firm with substantial holdings in the hospitality, aviation and real estate sectors.”

Commenting on where are Twin Otter airplanes manufactured, Mauracher said, “The Twin Otter Series 400 is the culmination of contributions from many sources in Canada and the United States, with the majority of the primary structure and detail parts manufactured at the Viking factory in Victoria, British Columbia.”

“The Viking Series 400 Twin Otters can hold a maximum of 19 passengers and two flight deck crew. This is the standard commuter configuration; however Twin Otter interiors are adaptable to different mission requirements.”

There are various models of the Viking aircrafts to suit commercial operations, optimised seaplane, industrial support, essential services, special missions, private/recreational and cargo transport.
