MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Information Technology Authority (ITA), participated in the celebration of the Safer Internet Day, which is celebrated every first Tuesday from the month of February every year.

More than 100 countries celebrated this international day, and this year it came under the theme (Be the change: Unite for a better Internet).

On this occasion, the ITA, represented by Oman CERT, held a number of workshops and lectures; in addition to sharing messages through social media channels to raise awareness on cyber security and promote the culture of proper use of the Internet. The campaign also addressed the Internet risks for children and the best ways to deal with them, as well as highlighting the legal aspects in the use of the Internet in general and social media channels specifically.

The Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. It started as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, and then has gone beyond its geographical border to be celebrated by all.

From cyber bullying to social networking, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns.
