MUSCAT, Aug 13 - In the wake of recent drowning incidents, the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) has launched a safety awareness drive for visitors to the Dhofar Governorate. Many PACDA officials have been standing guard at major tourist spots, distributing leaflets on safer holidaying. “This (campaign) is a new initiative of the authority to safeguard visitors to Salalah and elsewhere,” a senior PACDA official told the Observer. It is dangerous to dive into a wadi or near a waterfall, he said. “Look out for the warning signs and check with local residents or nearby tour guides about the safety of venturing out into water.”

Two people died due to drowning last week, while two Sri Lankan girls drowned in the Ain Jarziz water spring in Salalah sometime ago when they were trying to take a selfie. A hotel staff drowned when he defied an advisory and ventured into sea in another incident. “Incidents of drowning and recklessness among holidaymakers are a cause of concern. Hence, we carry out awareness campaigns for safe holidaying from time to time,” said the PACDA official.
