ASTANA: It remains unclear whether representatives of the Syrian government and rebels will meet face to face at talks in Astana, although this is their main objective, a Russian diplomat said on Sunday. Alexander Lavrentyev, head of the Russian delegation to the Astana talks, said the parties hoped to agree on the format of the meetings before their start on Monday. A Syrian opposition delegation arrived in the Kazakh capital Astana for talks with representatives of the Syrian government planned to start on Monday, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported.

The talks, sponsored by Russia and Turkey, are expected to focus on consolidating a shaky ceasefire that went into effect in Syria on December 30. Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the opposition team’s arrival on Sunday without specifying its members. They are believed to include representatives of rebel groups that have supported Syria’s nationwide truce, brokered by Moscow and Ankara, TASS reported. “New initiatives are not planned,” a source close to the talks told the agency. — Agencies
