By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: APRIL 5 - Despite several measures to ensure safety and security at businesses and other installations, some rodents took the managers of a business house by surprise.

The security agencies in Salalah made these managers get up from deep slumber after motion detectors or burglar alarms installed in their business unit started giving signals to the security agencies about some unidentified movements.

These motion detectors are installed in the installations where valuable things are kept and are connected with some network with the security agencies for prompt action in case of breach.

“We were trying to be as discreet as possible to catch the culprits red handed. For this we were making the least possible sound while approaching the business unit,” said one of the managers of the business house dealing in electronic products. The manager did not want to be identified.

“Finding nothing visible from outside, we opened the doors and to our utter amusement, we found some rodents running freely across the unit,” the manager said.

Then business unit deactivated the motion detector and sanitised the business unit. “The system was activated again after plugging the loopholes.” Commenting on the detectors, the manager explained, “It is a kind of device which raises alarm after someone is found moving in a designated area. Generally it is programmed to function after business hours. In some cases it is connected through network with the local security agency to make it foolproof and prompt action.”

Reasons for possible flaws resulting in false alarm, according to him, are too many: “There may be the case of a faulty equipment, human error, low battery or inconsistent power supply, unlocked or loose doors and windows, incorrect installation or pets, rodents, and insects.”

He suggested choosing the right system to avoid false alarm. “It is a different matter that false alarm was raised from our unit despite the fact that we have installed one of the best equipment available in the market. We learnt a lesson from this situation to sanitise our place more frequently.”

Other measures he suggested to avoid false alarm are, utilising a brief familiarisation period; training appropriately those with access to the system; installing a system with two-way communication capabilities; requiring dual verification; conducting a short debriefing after a false alarm; and performing occasional maintenance.
