Road accidents fall 35.6pc

MUSCAT: The number of expatriates who lost their lives in road mishaps increased by 9.3 per cent during the first 11 months of 2016, compared with figures for the same period last year, according to the latest update on road accidents released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). As many as 223 expatriates died in road accidents during the period, among whom 29 were females. On the other hand, the number of Omanis who lost lives in road mishaps fell by 6.7 per cent to 393, which included 62 females. Overall, road accidents, including both injuries and deaths showed a 35.6 per cent drop during the January-November period compared with the same period of 2015.


The number of Omani males who died in road accidents fell by 6 per cent to 331, compared with a 10.1 per cent drop in the number of Omani female deaths. In contrast, the number of fatalities among expatriate males went up by 6 per cent to 194, along with a 38.1 per cent rise in the number of expatriate female deaths. Meanwhile, there has been a considerable drop of 23.1 per cent in the number of traffic injuries during the period, which declined to 2,604 this year from 3,388 injuries logged last year during the same period. Injured Omanis decreased 24.4 per cent to 1,949 while injured expatriates numbered 655 recording a 19 per cent decline over figures for last year.


The number of Omani males injured in road accidents dropped 23.8 per cent to 1,455 while injured Omani females declined 26.2 per cent to 494. The drop in the number of injured expat males stood at around 20 per cent with 567 males sustaining injuries, compared with a 12.9 per cent fall in the number of injured female expatriates whose numbers declined to 88 by the end of November. Meanwhile, three Omanis were killed on Sunday as their vehicles caught fire following a collision in the Al Hoqain-Haimly road of al Rustaq.
