Road accidents drop 33.3 per cent

MUSCAT: The number of road accidents has dropped by 33.3 per cent from 895 to 597 during the first three months of this year compared to the same period of last year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The number of fatalities counted in road traffic accidents stood at 155 of whom 94 were Omanis and 71 expats. In addition, 684 people were injured (466 Omanis and 218 expats). The statistics showed that 59 per cent of the road accidents registered in March occurred at night.


The majority of the road accidents occurred in February at 224 while 194 accident happened in January and 179 accident took place in March. Muscat Governorate accounted for 25.1 per cent of the total number of road accidents followed by South Al Batinah Governorate 13.8 per cent, Dhofar 12.8 per cent, North Al Batinah 11.7 per cent and the rest of the governorates registered 37 per cent.
