Muscat, Dec 25 - In an attempt to control the spread of Aedes aegypti (dengue) mosquitoes, the Muscat Municipality has asked the people to take measures to prevent the breeding of rodents and spread of mosquitoes, flies and insects. The civic body has especially asked those responsible for maintenance of apartments, farms, plots, health facilities, water wells and storage tanks to take proper measures. It said that both occupants and owners of houses — as per Article 48 of the local order 1/2006 — have “full responsibility” throughout the construction period and after, to control the growth and spread of pests, rodents and stray animals.

Article 50 of the local order says it is prohibited to keep septic tanks, sewage inspection rooms, water connections and ventilation pipes open. It says ventilation pipes should be covered with a soft metal mesh to prevent mosquitoes from entering them. “Owners of multi-storey buildings not complying with cleaning, pest control and proper disposal of waste will be fined RO 300 and given a three-day deadline to rectify violations,” warned the municipality. The fine will be doubled for repeated violations.

In the case of sewage leakage or failure to maintain drainage lines in buildings (commercial, residential, commercial, industrial, tourist attractions), they will be fined RO 1,000. Repeat offences will attract a fine of RO 3,000. While praising the community for spreading rumours and joining hands with the work teams, the municipality said the role of society is to follow preventive measures to contain the growth of insects and rodents.
