Rehabilitation work gathers pace

MUSCAT, May 27 - The National Committee for Civil Defence (NCCD), which held a meeting on Sunday under the chairmanship of Lt Gen Hassan bin Mohsin al Shraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, NCCD Chairman, reviewed the current situation in Dhofar Governorate after Mekunu.  According to the National Emergency Management Centre until Sunday evening, rehabilitation teams were still continuing to make way through Dhalkout and Rakhyout.


The roads have been damaged making accessibility to the places impossible, and rains continue to be a hindrance.

The authorities who were on the ground tackling Cyclone Mekunu, its impact and aftermath, praised the considerable cooperation by the public in adhering to the guidance which resulted in a significant impact on the reduction of damage. They also reviewed


the effects of the impact of Mekunu on the governorate and the efforts made by all public institutions, private sector, citizens and residents.


The Ministry of Defence and the Sultan’s Armed Forces played a crucial role in various ways with Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) evacuating citizens and residents from Al Halaniyat Islands much before the onset of Mekunu, and the latest being airlifting of pediatric asthmatic patients from Adonub to Armed Forces Hospital in Salalah.

The Defence Engineering Services has been repairing the Adonub Bridge in Salalah.


A number of vessels from the Royal Navy of Oman had moved from Said bin Sultan Naval Base and Sultan Qaboos Port to the Governorate of Dhofar to aid in search and rescue operations, survey affected coastal areas in addition to providing support to relief teams in terms of medical as well as conduct hydrographic surveys. Using jet skis and boats, rescue teams from the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance assisted people trapped in water.
