MUSCAT: The Ministry of Higher Education represented by the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) prepares to open registration for the e-admission system for holders of general education diploma or equivalent for the school year 2016/2017 with effect from April 1 to June 1.
During the press conference held at the Ministry of Higher Education HQs’, Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Sarmi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, said that the number of seats available for the academic year 2017/2018, as received from the public higher education institutions, the internal scholarship, the local and foreign scholarships funded by the private companies and scholarships by friendly countries stood at 29,537.
The under-secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education said that the Omani students of the age group between 16 to 25 may register at the e-admission system and apply for the study programme offered by the public higher education institutions, the internal scholarship at the private higher education institutions and the foreign scholarships for studying at higher education institutions abroad.
He pointed out that the latest development for this year is the converting of the College of Applied Science in Al Rustaq to the College of Education in response to the decision of the Education Council. The College of Education in Al Rustaq provides programmes of study in chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and English language. 100 seats have been allocated for students from the governorates of Dhofar, Musandam and Al Wusta, as well as other schools from other governorates as well. This comes in a bid to nationalise the teaching jobs at the remote villages and prepare teachers from locals in these areas. The number of programmes allocated for those with special needs has been expanded at some public and private higher education institutions.
Foreign scholarships in USA were also introduced for those suffering from hearing difficulty. The total number of seats allocated for people with special needs stood at 234.
He affirmed that holders of certificates issued by the Saudi schools inside or outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia should get equalisation certificate from the Ministry of Education in the Sultanate.
He also pointed out that the HEAC has classified the higher education institutions programmes, the internal and foreign scholarships at the student manual depending on the majors, such as health, natural sciences, physics, engineering and others to facilitate the selection of the preferred major of the student. The method allows students to apply for at least 12 programmes of study, which may be increased if the requirements are met. — ONA
