LONDON: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, participated in the meetings of the Marine Environment Protection Committee at its 72nd session held at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, UK.

The Sultanate was represented in the meeting by Amran bin Mohammed al Kamzari, Director of Pollution Control Centre, and Abdullah bin Said al Busafi, Senior Environmental Specialist.

The meeting discussed a number of environmental issues related to marine transport and environmental impacts on the marine environment and the atmosphere, including reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, adoption of mandatory data collection system for fuel oil consumption by all types of vessels, approval of roadmap to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by setting the ceiling of sulfur levels to the current global limit, and reflects a clear commitment from IMO to ensure respect shipping operations with their environmental obligations.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has an important role to play in helping to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, in particular goal 14 of sustainable development goals.

At this session, the committee also considered the issue of plastic waste from shipping operations to find mandatory controls to reduce it substantially by 2025 as contained in Annex V of MARPOL Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution from ship wastes. — ONA
