MUSCAT, May 8 - The Sultanate has successfully recorded and documented goats of Jabal al Akhdhar at the World Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) site. Dr Hamood bin Darwish al Hasani, DG of Agriculture and Animal Research at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and Head of Omani Animals Breeds Characterisation Team, said that the documentation is important as it helps conservation of local animal breeds. Al Hasani added that the team is currently coordinating with specialists of the Intellectual Property Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to protect this breed by documenting it according to geographical indications.

During the coming period, further measures will be taken to register the rest of other local animal breeds. In the same context, the team also held its fourth meeting this year with participation of specialists from MoAF, The Research Council and the Sultan Qaboos University. The attendees reviewed proposals and procedures related to protecting the local animal breeds.
