Public Prosecution’s ‘tweet’ reminder on throwing trash

By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT: Jan 3: Throwing trash out of a moving vehicle will not only cost you money, but will also land you in jail. A tweet by the Public Prosecution to this effect on Tuesday made it clear it meant business. The tweet made it clear the act of throwing trash out of a vehicle is punishable by a 10-day jail term. Aimed at motorists, it said: “Dear drivers, throwing trash out of vehicles can result in 10 days of imprisonment.”

The emphasis coincides with Muscat Municipality’s recently launched ‘Keeping Muscat Clean’ campaign.

The jail term and a fine of up to RO 300 on violators had been mentioned earlier. The latest tweet clearly defines it as a “crime punishable by law”.

“The Sultanate has earned its place as one of the cleanest countries. This law will ensure it remains so,” said Jabber Salim al Ajmi, an expert on domestic tourism.

He said he had come across many sites that were littered during his recent visit to Wadi Bani Khalid, Bidiya and the Sharqiya Sands. “Obviously, they were left behind by campers. They could have easily taken it back in their vehicles and dumped it in trash cans,” said Al Ajmi.

“We should have a culture of cleanliness. It’s a habit that should be nurtured at home.”

“The law is good because it conveys a strong message. If we improve our culture of cleanliness, there will come a day when we won’t need cleaners on the road. That will also help save millions in the long run,” he said.

“While it is a right move, visitors must be alerted in advance about the law,” feels Ajayan Poyyara, manager of operations, Sandrose Trading LLC.

“It’s an important law. Many people are careless about trash. I have seen people throwing trash when they see open spaces,” he said.
