MUSCAT: The Oman Animal & Plant Genetic Resources Centre (OAPGRC) plans to build a specialised genetic centre for animal, plant seeds, fish and microorganisms, said Abdullah bin Ali al Rawahi, Deputy Executive Director for Support Services.

The centre, with an area of 500 square metres, will be provided with modern labs.

Unveiling the key projects that will be implemented in partnership with public and private sectors at a press conference on Tuesday, he said the Marthon (Manafea) project will be implemented this year.

The project aims to attract entrepreneurs to offer them ideas on how to commercially use genetic sources and set up projects such as extracting plastic from fish scales and organic fertilisers.

The centre, in cooperation with public organisations, will organise in May a forum that aims at spreading awareness among public and private sectors as well as business community the importance of diversified genetic resources in the Sultanate.

It will attract experts in genetic resources and their products.

The key projects in 2017 included retrieving some of the seeds world seeds’ banks have collected from the Sultanate in the past, including Omani wheat.

The seeds were in Bahla for reproduction and stored at the genetic bank. The centre brought out two publications on maritime species and national plant strategy.
