Under the auspices of Sayyid, Faisal bin Turki al Said, Patron of Outward Bound Oman, and in the presence of HRH Prince Andrew The Duke of York KG, a celebration was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Muscat to signify the completion of Oman’s first purpose built outdoor training centre.

Located some 12km into the Sharqiya Sands, the centre is the first of three being constructed to enable Outward Bound Oman to work with much larger numbers of youth, and corporate talent in Oman. Sleeping up to 60 people, and with fully equipped AV room, meeting rooms, four learning pods, equipment stores, majlis and medical room, the centre provides a training environment that is unique to Oman.

All waste water is treated on site, and a large solar array makes it Oman’s first building totally powered by renewable solar energy. Designed by Muscat based architects 23 Degrees North, the centre is already being nominated for international design awards.

In addition to being a centre for Outward Bound operations, the centre has been designed to act as a residential environmental field study centre, with the aim of making Oman the global hub for arid environment research. Already the first booking has been made by team of UK medical experts who research extreme environment medicine at altitude, and also in cold and jungle environments.

Outward Bound started in the UK in 1941, where HRH The Duke of York, acts as chairman of the trustees of The Outward Bound Trust. The Duke addressed a large audience made up of various Ministers, Government and Private Sector partners who have supported Outward Bound in Oman since it was founded in May 2009, lauding the rapid progress made by Outward Bound in Oman since it was established. Outward Bound Oman’s Patron, His Highness Sayyid Faisal Bin Turki Al Said, spoke of his pride in being a part of this growth, and of the creation of the first national training centre.
