OPAL, PDO to support training of Omani job-seekers

Dec 27: Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL), the representative organisation of the Sultanate’s oil and gas industry, has joined hands with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to support the training of 100 young Omanis in preparation for careers across a number of technical and non-technical disciplines.
To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) setting out the terms of a collaborative arrangement was signed by the two organisations last week. PDO was represented at the MoU signing by Abdul-Amir al Ajmi, External Affairs and Value Creation Director. Musallam al Mandhry, Chief Executive Officer, signed on behalf of OPAL.
The initiative stems from PDO’s pledge to support the creation of 50,000 jobs in response to His Majesty the Sultan’s Royal directives, and as part of its long-standing efforts to develop the vocational qualifications of young Omanis on a par with internationally recognised standards.
Under the MoU, PDO fund the training of 100 Omanis who are registered as job-seekers in technical trades such as welding, electrical, mechanical, pipe-fitters, carpentry, and machine operators, among other technical or non-technical disciplines/skills that are identified from time to time.
Also offered as part of this initiative are managerial skills in line with NVQ level international certifications or equivalent, delivered through a six to 12-month training programme. The programme will include a foundation period imparting soft skills, such as English language, Work Ethics, Health and Safety, and IT.
For its part, OPAL has pledged to interact with prospective employers within and outside the oil and gas sector to help secure suitable placements for these recruits in line with procedures and guidelines mandated by the Ministry of Manpower, amongst other government agencies.
Commenting on the MoU, Musallam al Mandhry, CEO, said: “OPAL is delighted to partner once again with PDO in ensuring that young Omanis preparing for careers across various technical and non-technical trades have the skills suited to the labour market’s requirements. Our goal is to work proactively with potential employers to secure placements for the trainees on a full-time basis upon the successful completion of the training programme.”
