new delhi: Indians were grappling on Saturday with the new Goods and Services Tax (GST), described as the country’s biggest-ever tax reform. The GST came into effect at midnight and replaces 17 federal and state-level levies with the aim of making India’s fractured tax system into a common market. Many shops and restaurants in the Indian capital New Delhi were seen giving customers handwritten bills with a calculation of the new tax.
