Muscat, Oct 15 - The number of live births reached 88,346, including 81,868 Omanis and 6,478 expatriates, by the end of 2016, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). At the end of 2015, 86,286 live births (79,926 Omanis and 6,360 expatriates) had been recorded. The death toll was 8,167. The number of births increased by 242 per day in 2016, bringing the birth rate to 10 births per hour or one birth every six minutes.


In comparison, six births were recorded per day in 2015.


The birth rate among women in the childbearing age of over 35 years was 21.4 per cent in 2016, up 1.1 per cent from 2015.


The highest rate of childbearing among women aged 25 to 29 was 32.7 per cent in 2015 and 32.1 per cent in 2016. The figures reflect efforts made by the Ministry of Health in terms of developing the sector and upgrading the health services.


According to the report, male births account for 51.2 per cent of the total number of births.


The number of Omani births continued to rise between 2011 and 2016.


A maximum of 6,143 Omani children were born in 2012-13, 3,236 in 2014-15 and 1,942 in 2015-16. The rate of live births increased from 247 in 2013-14 to 69 in 2014-15 and 118 in 2015-16.

Muscat and North Al Batinah accounted for largest percentage of Omani live births (40.2 per cent), and Al Wusta and Musandam (1.9 per cent) the lowest.


More than half the expatriate children (53 per cent) were born in the Muscat Governorate and 1.7 per cent in Al Wusta and Musandam.


August recorded the highest percentage of live births (9.2 per cent) and February and April the lowest (7.7 per cent). A total of 8,828 deaths were recorded in 2016, including 7,399 Omanis and 1,429 expatriates. Omani deaths accounted for 83.8 per cent.


The percentage of Omani male deaths was 60.9 per cent (4,507) and expatriates 16.2 per cent.


Males accounted for 81.4 per cent of the total number of deaths.


The monthly death rate in 2016 was 735 and the daily average 24.


There were an additional 52 deaths of Omanis between 2011 and 2012, but the number decreased by 366 in 2012-13, rose by 226 in 2013-14 and by 326 in 2014-15. It rose by 65 in 2015-16.


The death of expatriates continued to rise until 2013, but declined by 76 in 2013-14, rose by 22 in 2014-15 and by 94 in 2015-16.


Between 2011 and 2016, the number of infant deaths rose by 220 (36.8 per cent). The number of infant mortality cases (those under five years) increased by 284 (39.1 per cent). In contrast, the number of youth deaths decreased by 43.


North Al Batinah Governorate accounted for 22.5 per cent of deaths followed by Muscat Governorate (17.3 per cent). Al Wusta and Musandam recorded the lowest percentage of deaths (1.8 per cent). March recorded the highest percentage of deaths (9.4 per cent).
