MUSCAT, FEB 7 -

In line with its Corporate Social Responsibility, Omantel has launched the second edition of the ‘Hour of Code’ initiative in the Sultanate, in collaboration with the leading Omani education centre ‘Engineering Village’.

The global movement involves a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming and has already reached tens of millions of students in over 180 countries. Omantel’s support of the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to grow the digital society, support innovation and development in Oman.

This initiative will surely be a big hit among youngsters here in Oman as it has already proved immense popularity in over 180 countries around the world.

There is no registration required to take part in this exciting event, parents can simply take their children aged between 8-14 years to Oman Avenues Mall in Muscat on February 10-11 from 12 noon to 10 pm. Coding tutorials are available in over 40 different languages and are specially crafted to appeal to children of young ages.

Speaking about the significance of the initiative, Omantel’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Laila al Wahaibi said, “We are proud to join hands with Engineering Village to bring the global phenomenon ‘Hour of Code’ to Muscat after the success of the first edition which took place in Dhofar Governorate.

Participants will spend an hour in learning the basics of coding, and they will be guided by Omantel’s ‘Ma’an’ volunteer team and ‘Engineering Village’ team. In our changing world, the way we educate the next generation must also change to fit the times.

We live in a world of rapid technological advancement; while children these days tend to be very technological savvy, many lack exposure to valuable future skills such as computer programming and coding skills that are becoming essential in today’s digital and interconnected global society.”
