MUSCAT, August 29 - Oman’s Asian Games medal hopes rest solely with the sailing team now after they registered a good performance in the 49IR category on Wednesday. The sailing team in the 49IR class has a decent chance of claiming a medal after they produced an efficient performance and stayed marginally behind Korea and six points off toppers Japan. However Omani sailors Abdul Malik al Hinai disappointed with his performance as he came down to the seventh place from the fifth spot.

Athletics hopes fade away

Omani sprinter Mohammed Obaid al Saadi finished at seventh place in the finals of 200 metres with a timing of 20.81 seconds. The gold medal went to the Korean sprinter Kouaiki, who recorded a time of 20.81s while Chinese Taipei sprinter Yang Man who was placed second registered the same timing. However, the photo finish decision ensured the gold went to the Korean. Bahraini sprinter Yaqoob grabbed the bronze medal as he recorded a timing 20.55s. Oman’s 4x100 men’s relay team finished in the sixth place and failed to progress.

Oman to play Lanka in hockey

Oman hockey team will take on Sri Lanka team on Thursday for the 7-8th place play-off. Oman would not be too unhappy with their performance with some of the Asian giants in the fray. Oman had suffered two losses against Bangladesh and Pakistan. Then, Oman beat Kazakhstan 4-0 in its last match to record its second victory in the competition following the victory against Thailand.
