Oman’s Barakat through to the next round

MUSCAT, Aug 25 - Omani sprinter Barakat al Harthy qualified for the second round in the 100 metres at the Asian Games after he was positioned at the second place in his group on Saturday. Al Harthy recorded a time of 10.21 seconds and was placed fifth in the qualification heat. Chinese Taipei’s Yang Chunhan claimed the first place with a time of 10.13s while Saudi sprinter Abdullah Said finished second with a timing of 10.15s and Qatari sprinter Ogunode Tosin ended third with a timing of 10.16s. Oman’s Fatik Awadh exited the qualification stages after he was positioned at the sixth place with a timing of 10.85 seconds.

The athletics team will now focus on the 200 metres on Sunday. The technical committee of the team finalised the list for the sprinters who will represent the team including: Mohammed al Saadi, Ammar al Sefi and Rashid al Asmi.

Oman beach volleyball team

Oman beach volleyball team (A) suffered a 2-0 defeat from the host team Indonesia at the quarterfinals of Asian Games in the Asian Games which is held in Indonesia until September 2. With this loss, Oman beach volleyball team left the competition after good performances in the prequalification round and knockout stages.

Oman, led by the likes of Mazin al Hasmi and Nouh al Jalbobi lost the first set 21-16 while the second set also finished with 21-16.

Oman reached the quarterfinal stage after they beat Palestine 2-0.

Shooting team

Oman national shooting team completed their participation at the Asian Games without qualifying for the knockout stages. Omani shooter Said al Hashmi was the last participant in the shooting competitions at 25 metre pistol category. Al Hashmi finished at the 16th place with 561 points. Oman national shooting team will travel to Korea to participate at the World Championships.

Hockey team

Oman national hockey team will take on Kazakhstan in the fourth game of the national team in the Asian games on Sunday. Today’s match and the next match against Malaysia will be crucial matches for the team to compete for a place in the semifinals.

Oman players coached by Tahir Zaman will be keen to register two more wins to provide themselves the best chance of reaching the semifinals. Oman players had a good training session prior to prepare for today’s match.

Oman national hockey team commenced their campaign with two losses, first a 2-1 defeat to Bangladesh followed by a 10-0 drubbing by Pakistan. In the third match, Oman team scored a 2-0 win over Thailand to remain in the competitions.

Oman sailing team

Omani sailors Mousab al Hadi and Waleed al Kindi finished in the fifth place in the 49 IR and laser category. At the 49 races, Omani sailors had five races at the second day of competitions. Indonesia headed the table order while Japan was positioned second. Thailand came third and Korea finished fourth. Omani sailors will continue their participation in the third day of competitions.

Al Kishry visited the athletes

Taha al Kishry, General Secretary of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), visited the athletes village at Palembang city. During his visit, al Kishry thanked all the national teams and athletes for their efforts and positive technical performance at the different competitions. Also, Al Kishry encouraged them to make more offers in the upcoming competitions. On the other hand, Rashid al Balushi, head of shooting team, appreciated OOC for their cooperation and for providing all the requirements of the teams. He said that the shooters tried their best to achieve honoured results and some shooters were very close but the competition was very tough.
