By Zainab al Nassri & Fahad al Ghadani — MUSCAT: Feb. 12 - Omani students in the United State have been asked to “adhere to rules and avoid any kind of disputes”, particularly at this “critical time”. The cultural attaché at the Sultanate’s Embassy in Washington DC has advised students to coordinate with the embassy and the attaché on issues pertaining to their study and residence, and to “avoid unsafe places”.

It has asked students to “avoid any legal questioning”. These instructions come in the wake of orders issued by the recently elected US President Donald Trump to regulate and restrict immigration in the country.

While asking students to avoid travelling back to Oman in February or March, the attaché said they could undertake travel only in “emergency situations” and only after its approval.

An Omani student based in Colorado in the US told the Observer: “The embassy has sent mails explaining the current issues and advised us to keep ourselves far from any suspicious situation.”

“We were advised not to travel in February and March, but I understand the ban is only for the current February and coming March,” said A Al Abri, the student.

He also said he didn’t come across any issues involving Omani students in the US.

Omani students have been asked to keep their “passports in a proper and safe place”. They were told to get their US identification cards or driving licences issued by authorities concerned to avoid using passports in all situations.

The attaché warned students against having or circulating any materials, including photographs, visual clips or audio broadcasts that may be suspicious.

They were asked to follow rules and regulations, and avoid keeping any sensitive videos or images in their laptop and smartphones which might put them under suspicious situations.
