Muscat: Omani nationals studying in institutions in south-west Australia, which was hit by an earthquake earlier in the day, are safe and sound, the Ministry of Higher Education announced here today, September 16.

A statement issued by the Ministry quoted Dr Hamoud bin Amer al Wardi, the Sultanate's Consul General in Australia, as confirming the safety and well-being of the Omani students in the quake-hit region.

The 5.6 magnitude tremor, which shook buildings in the area, had its epicenter some 10 kilometres below the surface in an area known as Walpole near Lake Muir, local reports said.

Dr Hamoud noted that the relatively mild quake was centred some 60 kilometres away from where the accommodations of the Omani students are located.

Only a handful of the students felt the quake, he said, stressing there was no damage to their lodgings as well.
