Muscat, August 29 - Omani Society of Queensland (OSQ) recently organised its annual graduation ceremony for the 2017 batch students at Griffith University in Brisbane.

The ceremony was presided over by Dr Hamed bin Ali al Alawi, Consul-General, Consulate General of Oman in Australia.

Omani students celebrated the graduation of 27 male and female students from various majors and degrees in the presence of Queensland Universities’ representatives and members of OSQ.

The ceremony began with the singing of the Oman’s national anthem followed by Australia’s national anthem. Later, some verses from the Holy Quran were recited by student Abdullah al Abbadi.

Dr Hamed al Alawi, in his speech, asked the graduates to “continue on the path of excellency and never give up”.

The Head of Omani Society in Queensland, Ismail al Habsi thanked the General-Consul, attendees and organisers.

The society’s main activities for 2017 along with a short film discussing the issue of ‘bad companions in the journey of scholars’ were highlighted on the occasion.

The audience participated in an interactive competition called Kahoot, in which questions were asked about Australia, and specifically about the city of Brisbane.

The ceremony concluded with the cutting of a graduation cake by the General-Consul.

Attendees were asked to walk through a mini-exhibition showcasing the photography talents of Omani students in Queensland.

While thanking the General Consulate in Australia for its “non-stop support”, OSQ vice-president Ahmed al Lawati said: “Every single graduate has given a highly positive feedback on the ceremony and its activities.”

Harith al Suleimani, a graduate who has majored in Sustainable Energy in the University of Queensland, told the Observer: ““It was a memorable event. It was a great way to gather the Omani community together and share the struggles and success stories throughout the educational journey.”

Zahra al Lawati, a Masters graduate in Project Management, said: “They say graduation ceremony is a celebration of all graduating students’ achievements, but I would say graduation ceremony is a celebration of Omanis’ achievements. The ceremony and its activities added to the charm and flavour of the graduation ceremony.”
