Omani-Indian Portraits and Paintings Exhibition opens tomorrow

MUSCAT: The Indian Embassy in Muscat, in conjunction with the Omani Society for Fine Arts, will organise the Omani-Indian Portraits and Paintings Exhibition from Nov ember 7 to 13 under the auspices of Dr Abdulmunim bin Mansour al Hasani, Minister of Information.


The gallery, which will be held at the headquarters of the Omani Society for Fine Arts, coincidences with the Sultanate’s celebrations of the 47th Glorious National Day.


India and Oman are linked by geography, history and culture and enjoy warm and friendly relations that are attributed to historical maritime trade linkages, intimacy of the Royal Family with India and the seminal role played by Indian community in building of Oman. Reflecting the importance of strategic relations between the two countries, there have been frequent visits at the highest level. Apart from visits of president Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma (1996) and vice-president Shri Krishna Kant (1999), prime ministers Shri Rajiv Gandhi (1985), P V Narasimha Rao (1993), Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1998) and Dr Manmohan Singh (2008) have also visited the Sultanate. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos visited India in 1997. The Exhibition will have paintings showcasing high-level meetings during these visits.


The maritime trade and cultural exchanges, spanning over 5,000 years between India and Oman, have led to intermingling of cultural traditions of the two countries as reflected in their crafts, textiles, cuisine, customs, etc. The exhibition will contain paintings of Indian and Omani crafts to illustrate their common features.


The exhibition will consist of portraits of prominent Omani and Indian leaders and paintings of arts and crafts of Oman and India, made by Indian artist, Sedunath Prabhakar. Besides, 30 paintings made by Indian artists, based in Muscat, depicting unique and representative places and people from 29 states and Delhi will also be on display in the exhibition.

Sedunath Prabhakar, who is presently based in Melbourne, is an inspired and well known Indian painter. He hails from Kerala state of India. He discovered his passion for art and painting in his early childhood. He began his career as a painter with painting of landscapes mainly using water colours. Later, he started experimenting with oil colours, in which he achieved great success.


Sedunath Prabhakar will be organising a four-day workshop during 8-13 November from 9 am to 12 pm. Aspiring painters interested to participate in the workshop may register their names directly with Omani Fine Arts Society (telephone: 24694969). A batch of 15-20 painters will be selected by Omani Fine Arts Society. Materials will be provided at the venue.
