Oman Thoracic meet begins with call for improvement in respiratory medicine

MUSCAT: The two-day conference covers specialties of pulmonary, respiratory, thoracic medicine and sleep medicine.


“Oman Thoracic 2017”, organised by Oman Respiratory Society, Sultan Qaboos University, Royal Hospital, Ministry of Health and Oman Medical Association, commenced on Thursday at SQU under the patronage of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health.


This two-day conference features a very comprehensive scientific programme catering to all specialties of pulmonary, respiratory, thoracic medicine and sleep medicine. This includes the state of the art lectures, panel discussions, workshops and research abstract presentations on the various fields in the specialty. The topics covered include Asthma, COPD, Pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung diseases, lung cancer, pulmonary infections, Sleep medicine, Noninvasive ventilation, Pulmonary function tests.


Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nasser al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Respiratory Society, said that the conference would give an opportunity for the delegates to listen to the national, regional and international experts in the field of respiratory medicine. “This naturally will raise the standard of care delivered to the patients with respiratory diseases in the Sultanate. Respiratory disorders constitute a major problem among patients attending the outpatient clinics all over the world. In addition, some common respiratory ailments constitute significant morbidity accounting for absenteeism from school and work.

Many new developments are taking place in the diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases. New guidelines on the management of different problems have been published recently. The aim of this conference is to educate the doctors and allied health professionals especially those involved in the primary care in the Sultanate and present to them the current developments in this field”, he said.


Delivering the keynote titled “Year in review”, Dr Sundeep Salvi, Director of the Chest Research Foundation (CRF) in Pune, India, underscored the importance of lungs as an organ, which provides the human body with 420 litres of oxygen every day, “Every human being needs to breathe 10,000 litres of air every day to stay well. The quality of air we breathe determines the quality of our health”, he said.


Dr Sundeep Salvi, is involved in driving research in the field of chronic respiratory diseases, with a major focus on obstructive airways diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in India.
