By Sports Reporter — MUSCAT: Hosts Oman will meet hard-working Egypt and Qatar take on strong contenders Syria in the semifinals of the second CISM World Cup football championship on Thursday. Egypt toppled Algeria 2-1 and Syria overcame the challenge of Germany by the same margin in the late semifinals on Tuesday. Earlier, Oman thrashed Mali 5-0 and Qatar beat Bahrain 4-2 on penalties to seal the last-four spots. At the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Egypt stunned Algeria when they opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Amro Marey. Egypt led 1-0 at the half-time.

In the second half, Algeria, realising the need of the hour, pressed hard and had their reward in the 51st minute when Hamia Mohamed Amine found the target. Then on, both the teams strengthened their defences and the score remained 1-1 at full time. In the ensuing extra-time, it was deadlock again in the first session. Though, the match appeared to go to penalty shoot-out, a last-minute stunner from Ahmed El Sheikh shattered the dreams of Algeria.

At the Seeb Sports Stadium, Syria edged Germany after conceding early lead. Andreas Dick converted a penalty in the 12th minute to give lead for Germany. Syria came back into the match with another penalty as Mohammad Alwakid made no mistake from the spot. At the half-time the score was 1-1. It was Mohammad Alwakid again for Syria in the final minute of the match as he fired home the winner to book a place in the semifinals.
