LONDON: The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) is taking part in the 37th World Tourism Market (WTM) in London from November 6 to November 8. The event hosted almost 5,000 organizations and participants around the globe, of which 20 were Omani organizations. The Sultanate’s delegation is led by Maitha Bint Saif al Mahrouqi, Under-Secretary of the MoT.

Al Mahrouqi said: “The MoT is keen to participate in the WTM year on year, as it provides a number of activities, forums, and discussion panels that offer a closer look into the trends and updates in the tourism sector. The event gathers tourism experts and specialists under one roof, and is a great platform to promote Oman as a unique tourism destination in the European market...the European tourism market is one of the crucial markets that the Sultanate is striving to target through its strategic plans. The number of European tourists who visited Oman during 2016 is 4,01,784 while the number of tourists visiting Oman from the UK in October 2017 has reached 98,556. These statistics are a reflection of the tremendous efforts made by the MoT to promote Oman on a global scale; and attract more international tourists to enjoy our distinctive tourism activities around the year.”

She also praised the role played by organizations in the tourism sector that participated in the exhibition; and helped develop and activate new tourism programs.

The first day of the exhibition witnessed a number of gatherings and official meetings that were held in the Sultanate’s

pavilion, involving international governmental delegations, investors, businessmen, and travel and tourism companies.

During the 3-day exhibition, 80 workshops were organized that tackled a number of issues encompassing a variety of topics in the tourism sector, such as aviation, hotels, weddings, honeymoon plans, the art of cooking, sports tourism, responsible tourism, and the role of social media and travel technology were organised.

London’s WTM is one of the most highly anticipated international events and offers the chance to attract tourism investment from around the world. WTM sees the participation of nearly 50,000 visitors each year, offering more than 300,000 connection opportunities for the participants.

It is worth to mention that the Sultanate aims to attract the European tourism markets by participating in the WTM, as the Sultanate is witnessing the final stages of its infrastructure projects such as the new Muscat International Airport, Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, Oman Cultural Complex, as well as expanding its airlines, transport and communication network.
