Muscat: Oman may host new Test entrants Ireland for an official International Cricket Council (ICC) sanctioned T20I series in February next year in what could be a major leap for the Sultanate as a cricketing venue. The news was revealed by Oman Cricket’s senior board member Pankaj Khimji on the sidelines of the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour on Monday. “We will probably be hosting Ireland in February next year for maybe two or maybe three games. This will be the first real international series in Oman accorded international status by the ICC,’’ Khimji added. This development comes at the back of Oman being given hosting rights for the World Cricket League (WCL) Division III tournament to be held in November.

WATERSHED MOMENT

Khimji emphasised on the huge significance of the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour being held in Oman. “It’s a watershed moment as far as Oman Cricket is concerned and the trophy itself epitomises the aspirations and the significance of the moment for the nation. The fact that Muscat will be the first city where the World Cup Trophy will be showcased will be an immensely proud moment for Oman. Cricket followers in Oman will be eagerly looking forward to hosting and organising the event,’’ he added. Khimji thanked the Sports Ministry for their support. “We are extremely grateful and thankful to the Ministry of Sports Affairs for their support. They have left no stone unturned for showcasing Oman as one of the most wonderful places,’’ Khimji said. Oman had qualified and participated in the ICC World T20 in 2016 in India and had garnered the cricketing world’s attention with their performances.
