Oman to launch CISM WC bid today

By Sports Reporter — MUSCAT: Jan. 14 - Former runners-up Oman will begin their campaign in the second CISM World Cup football championship 2017 against Guinea on Sunday. The opening ceremony slated for a 6.15 pm start at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, will be presided over by HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tareq al Said. The Sultanate will host the 2017 CISM World Cup from January 15 to 28 at three different venues — the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, Seeb Sports Stadium and ROP Stadium in Al Wattayah.

Oman, who are placed in Group A, will play their second match against Bahrain on January 18. The Sultanate team completes the group matches against France on January 20.


The hosts will play all their group matches at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.


Group B comprises Algeria, Iran, Germany and Brazil while Qatar, Iraq, United States and Mali form Group C. Egypt, Syria, Poland and Canada are placed in Group D.


The quarterfinals will take place on January 24. The semifinals will be played on January 26. The third-place play-off and the final are scheduled for January 28.


The opening ceremony will also be attended by a number of ministers, commanders of the Sultan’s Armed Forces (SAF), military and security agencies, a number of employees of the Ministry of Defence and SAF, the Royal Guard of Oman (RGO) and Royal Oman Police (ROP).


CISM World Cup will see a total of 16 teams competing for the honours.

Oman have finished runners-up in the two previous Military World Football Championships. This time, much expectations are on the team to lift the title.


The team has many players from the Oman national team, including star striker Abdulaziz al Maqbali.


The team, coached by Mohanna Saeed, also comprises other national palyers like Fayeez al Rashdi, Riyadh Subait, Nader Awad, Saad al Araimi, Mahmoud al Mushaifri, Saud al Farsi, Saad Suhail al Mukhaini, Mohammed al Musallami, Yassin al Shiyadi, Qasim Said, Juma Darwish, Basil al Rawahi and Said al Ruzaiqi.


It will be the first time that the host country will hand over the winners a trophy that carries its name. Previously, the winners were given the Shield of the championship. The organising committee had announced that fans can watch all matches for free. Earlier, the representatives of the CISM visited the venues for the games and were briefed on the preparations at the stadiums. The representatives expressed satisfaction with the arrangements put in place by the organising committee.
