Oman, Lanka reaffirm strong ties

COLOMBO: Karu Jayasuriya, Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, on Thursday received Dr Mohammed bin Awadh al Hassan, Acting Under secretary of the Foreign Ministry for Diplomatic Affairs, on the sidelines of the second sessions’ meetings for political consultations between the Sultanate and Sri Lanka.


During the meeting, Jayasuriya affirmed the strong historic relations binding the Sultanate and Sri Lanka and the joint desire to promote these relations on various fields. He expressed his admiration of Sultanate’s achievements when he visited the Sultanate last March 2018.


He also said that history recorded several visits of Omani sailors who made Sri Lanka a major station in their overseas trade with East Asian countries, such as China. He called for developing and enhancing cooperation between the two countries in international navigation in the Indian Ocean.


The meeting was attended by Shaikh Juma bin Hamdan al Malik al Shehi, Sultanate’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and Shaikh Hilal bin Marhoon al Maamari, Head of West Asia Department at the Foreign Ministry, while it was attended from the Sri Lankan side by Chief of the Protocols of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan officials. — ONA
