Oman inbound tourism expenditure rises 15pc

RO 288.2 m: Average tourism spend per visitor stood at RO 110 -


MUSCAT: The Sultanate’s inbound tourism expenditure in 2015 registered a healthy growth of 14.9 per cent in 2015 at RO 288.2 million, compared with an inbound expenditure of RO 250.9 million in 2014, according to a recent bulletin from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


Accommodation accounted for 38.1 per cent of the total inbound expenditure at RO 109.9 million, while air travel formed 25.7 per cent at RO 74 million. Food and beverages had a share of 14.8 per cent of the total inbound tourism expenditure at RO 42.7 million, while shopping contributed 11 per cent at RO 31.7 million, even as internal transport marked 6.1 per cent of the total inbound expenditure at RO 17.4 million in the year 2015. Expenditure per visitor stood at RO 110.1 in 2015, the NCSI report says.


Share of tourism in Oman’s GDP stood at 2.8 per cent in 2015, and the share is expected to reach 6 per cent by 2040. Also, tourism balance showed a deficit of RO 199.7 million in 2015.


Giving details on the outbound tourism expenditure, the report indicates that air travel constituted 25.8 per cent of the outbound expenses at RO 125.8 million, while accommodation formed 17 per cent at RO 83 million. Food and beverages’ share was 14.6 per cent at RO 71.3 million, while external transport accounted for 4 per cent of the outbound expenditure at RO 19.4 million. Further, 24.3 per cent of the outbound expenditure was spent on shopping at RO 118.4 million.


The report also showed that 25.3 per cent of the internal tourism expenditure in 2015 was spent on specific tourism products including shopping, while 16.4 per cent went for accommodation services. Air transport accounted for 16 per cent of the internal expenditure. — ONA
