Oman Air new baggage policy takes effect

By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: Jan. 9 – Oman Air’s new baggage policy has taken effect from Monday, the travel agents and passengers were informed. As per the policy, the maximum weight of a checked-in baggage should not exceed 30kg, while the length shouldn’t be more than 158cm.
Baggages that do not conform to these dimensions may be accepted as Specialist Baggage (SB) or cargo and charged accordingly. The First Class or Business Class passengers can carry two pieces of baggage, one weighing 30kg and another 20kg. “The free baggage allowance policy, applicable to all tickets issued from January 9, allows passengers to receive a generous free baggage allowance to all destinations,” a statement to the travel agents in the country noted.
Gold and Silver Sinbad members will get more free allowance, providing a ‘total free baggage allowance’ as a way of recognising frequent flyers and loyal passengers.
These passengers can carry two bags, each weighing 30kg if they are travelling First or Business Class. For Economy Class passengers, it is 30kg and 20kg respectively.
In addition to free allowance, a new low-cost, flat-rate fee has been introduced for passengers who want to carry more baggage on board.
“Passengers can carry extra baggage starting from RO 16 for a 20kg baggage. They can purchase extra baggage at the airport when checking in or avail of a 20 per cent discount by purchasing extra baggage in advance on,” said Oman Air statement.
Passengers onboard long-haul flights can carry up to four pieces of extra baggage.
Travel agents and holiday-goers welcomed the move. “Compared with the old rates, the new extra baggage rates for additional pieces seem to be very attractive. It can yield positive results in the long run,” says Xavier Kavalam, Manager, Skyline Travels and Tours.
“Having said that, I feel it can be slightly difficult for an elderly passenger or a woman to handle a 30kg baggage,” he added.
