OCCI organises social responsibility seminar

MUSCAT: Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), in cooperation with the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions (GFOTU), organised at its HQs on Tuesday a seminar titled “Social Responsibility: Integration of Rights, Development of Work and Sustainable Development” under the patronage of Shaikh Abdullah bin Nasser al Bakri, Minister of Manpower.


The chief guest said in a statement to reporters that social responsibility plays an important role in cementing relations among the production parties on one hand and fostering relations between the private sector and the society on the other hand.


“The Omani private sector has carried out several major initiatives at the different sectors especially those related to industry, environment protection, oil and gas,” he added.


“The major companies have played a leading role in the development of the society by providing direct and indirect support to workers at the private sector and citizens at the local communities,” he further said.


The Minister of Manpower also pointed out that the seminar enhances social responsibility culture in the Sultanate and provides the framework and mechanisms for action during the upcoming period,” he said.


While addressing the gathering at the opening speech, Said bin Saleh al Kiyoumi, Chairman of OCCI said that the seminar discusses the corporate social responsibility (CSR) at a time there are many methods for implementing CSR practices. He added that providing the conducive milieu for CSR is the first step to ensure proper implementation of CSR initiatives. He noted that the governmental organisations are responsible for providing the conducive milieu for CSR.


On his part, Nabhan bin Ahmed al-Battashi, Chairman of GFOTU said that the seminar aims at promoting social responsibility awareness among individuals and institutions. He added that the seminar comes at time the oil prices are going downward and the Government is seeking alternative sources of revenues to ensure growth of the national economy. The second version of OCCI CSR Award was also launched. The award aim at promoting social responsibility culture and recognise the great role played by the companies and establishments in this regard. — ONA
