MUSCAT: The National Breast Cancer Awareness and Examination Programme, organised by the Oman Cancer Association (OCA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, represented by the Department of Woman and Child Health, will kick off on September 16.

This was announced at a press conference held by the OCA at its headquarters to reveal the details of the National Breast Cancer Awareness and Examination Programme.

Dr Wahid bin Ali al Kharousi, OCA Chairman, said that the programme comes in partnership with the Ministry of Health, represented by the Department of Woman and Child Health and the National Oncology Centre and in collaboration with Mazoon Pharmacy and Roche.

He added that the programme aims to create awareness of the society to reduce cancer as a major tool for prevention and control and the importance of repeated and systematic examination, which provides an opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

He further said that the programme will continue for six months, including visits to six governorates in the Sultanate. The campaign will start in the Governorate of Muscat and then move to Governorate of Dhofar and other governorates.

The campaign will target women in the governorates and students from grades 10 and above.

He pointed out that the programme will be operated by trained nurses from the governorates of the Sultanate and with the participation of doctors from the National Oncology Centre.

Dr Al Kharousi said that the mammography unit of the Oman Cancer Association will be ready to follow up the programme and move between governorates to provide free x-rays for women aged between 40 to 60 years. — ONA
