MUSCAT: Oman Cricket (OC) has been striving to make it easier for players to hone their skills at the time of their convenience and a huge step has been taken in that direction by installing floodlights on the main practice facility adjacent to the Ministry of Sports grassy grounds in Al Amerat.

A multi-lane floodlit net practice facility with vast grassy outfield has been a distant dream for cricketers in Oman for far too long. This has now become a shining reality, offering top teams in Oman top of the range practice facilities with more to come in the coming days.

Kanak Khimji, OC Chairman, accompanied by Madhu Jesrani, Secretary Oman Cricket, and Duleep Mendis, OC Chief Development Officer, recently inaugurated the facility and installation of floodlights.

Varying work environment, long working hours and harsh weather conditions for much of the season make it difficult for players to practice in the daylight in order to prepare well for the matches. Floodlit facilities, like the one in Amerat, have now solved the issue as teams can conveniently schedule their net and training sessions at night.

“A facility like this was badly needed in Oman, particularly in Amerat, which has now become the main centre of cricket in the country. Installing floodlights was the need of the hour and Oman Cricket has taken another major step in laying down the necessary infrastructure of international standard,” said Mendis, who is also the head coach of Oman national team.

Oman Cricket is upgrading the infrastructure in phases to bring its facilities to the international standard, which is a prerequisite to hosting international cricket events in the country.

“Completion of Oman Cricket Academy building in the coming weeks will mark the realisation of our dream to provide excellent playing and practice facilities to our players. We thank OC management for putting its heart and soul in the realisation of this dream,” Mendis added.
