No leaks in LPG cylinder: Ministry

Muscat, Dec 17 - Refuting reports on social media, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has denied any leak in the domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. Social media was wife with reports of “cold liquid” leaking from the cylinders, with some claiming it was water.

The ministry explained an LPG cylinder consists of butane and propane gas, which turn the gas into “cold liquid”. Because of high pressure, it comes out in the form of gas. When there is no pressure, cold liquid comes out and evaporates gradually.

The ministry said in a statement that “the liquid is gas and is very dangerous”.

Consequently, it advised the public to deal with gas cylinders with caution in the event of such leaks to prevent fire or explosion.

Many feel the public should never deal with the gas cylinder. According to them, it is the distributors’ responsibility.

However, many expressed concern as distributors refuse to deliver the cylinder to many homes. Then, the customer has to carry it in his vehicle and fix it all by himself at his home.

LPG suppliers in many parts of Muscat refuse to deliver the gas cylinder to the customers’ home, while some charge extra money for the same.
